At a point in your life or career where you feel you haven’t found what you’re good at, or what you enjoy doing enough to make you get up in the morning and go to work? Fancy a change? Bored of sitting at your desk? Hate making coffee now? Maybe you have too many choices, and boy, what a problem to have! Seriously, we’re all so over-saturated with people online doing cool stuff that it makes us question our choices.“I wish I could buy a van and live in it! Wait, no. I want to start my own swimwear brand. Actually, that gym looks amazing. I want to work there”.
Let’s hit pause. We all need dreams and ambitions to work towards, but if your head is always in the unattainable clouds, you’ll miss out on what’s really going on in your life.
Here’s 11 ways to hit the reset button on your career path.
1.Self-Assess: Start by evaluating your skills, interests, values, and personality traits. At RGC we all did the 16 Personalities to understand what we’re all like to work with. Highly recommend and it’s easy and cute. Think about what activities you enjoy, what you're good at, and what you value in a work environment.
2.Research: Explore different industries and jobs that align with your self-assessment results. Would you be a good teacher, marine biologist, or carpenter? If so, what do you need to get there? Look into the day-to-day responsibilities, required skills, and potential career paths in various fields.
3.Ask: Try and talk to people in those industries! People like being asked about themselves, generally, so find out about their career path and experiences. This will give you insight into what working in a specific job or industry is really like and you’ll expand your network.
4.Educate: If you find a field or job that requires specific skills or qualifications you don't have, consider what education or training you might need and how much time it will take AND cost you. This could range from short courses or certifications to more formal degrees and higher education.
5.Experience: Look for internships, volunteer opportunities, part-time jobs, or freelancing projects that can give you hands-on experience in industry. Gaining experience is the instant and surefire way to know if it’s for you or not.
6.Networking: Networking will help you find that experience. Get involved in community organisations related. Join Facebook groups and follow Instagram pages of relevant pages that could help you find work. Networking leads to more opportunities. Even though it can be daunting, everyone networks at some point in their career in one way or another!
7.Goals: Once you have a better idea of what you might want to do, set short-term and long-term career goals. Remember, it's okay to change your mind later. Careers now are often more about the journey than the destination. You don’t have to work in the same career for 40 years anymore. You life is a portfolio of experiences.
8.Guidance: Got someone who inspires you? Reach out and ask for advice!
9.Stay Flexible: Be open to exploring different paths. The job market is constantly changing, and new opportunities may arise that you hadn't considered before.
10.Take Action: Once you have a clearer idea of what you want to do, start taking steps toward that goal. This means applying for the job, enrolling in the course, actually turning up to the networking thing! Remember, if you did only one useful thing a day, you’re still better off than the day before.
